Hey folks,
As most of you know that follow us on Mash Gym’s fan page on Facebook, there are some huge things happening that separates us from everybody else!

First, former student, Assistant Instructor and Personal MMA Trainer Myles “Fury” Jury earned a spot on the “Spike’ hit show “The Ultimate Fighter”! Myles trained at Warrior Way (Commerce, MI) and Mash Gym (Redford, MI) under the close tutelage of “Big Don” Richard and world renowned Muay Thai Champion Matee Jedeepitak since he was only 13 years old! A knee injury (not defeat), cut Myles stay short at the fighter house, but in his time there caught the attention of both coaches and Mr. Dana White! Myles will get his UFC shot in the near future and only the sky is the limit for this soon to be superstar!

Another Mash Gym fighter with ties to the famous Hammer House Gym in Ohio, Josh “The Hammer” Burns is on a tear! With an impressive 6 – 2 Pro MMA record, Josh is now fighting in an upcoming Bellator event! Josh’s next opponent is the UFC’s Gabriel Gonzaga! This should be a battle! Be sure to follow on Mash Gym’s fan page!
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu being a trade mark here at Mash Gym, we have numerous stand outs on both MMA and Jiu-Jitsu fronts. Two of our students (and assistant instructors) have really shined in the past couple years. David Garmo (West Bloomfield) and Jason Fischer (Livonia) have dominated, both receiving their purple belts in Jiu-Jitsu. David, with over 50 Jiu-Jitsu wins and dozens of 1st place finished has been showing his Jiu-Jitsu prowess all over the country!

Jason, with a 7 – 0 amateur MMA record made his Professional debut with a 2nd round KO at the Palace of Auburn Hills February 18th, 2011. Jason has dozens of wins in Jiu-Jitsu, along with being ranked as one of Matee’s best students! The future is looking bright here in Redford, Michigan at Mash Gym!

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA Training
The effectiveness of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) has been very well documented. From high-octane mixed martial arts competitions to the unforgiving city streets, this fighting system has been shown to be an effective antidote against larger, stronger opponents.

Misuyio Esai Maeda, the revered judoka expert, brought this unique fighting art to Brazil during the early part of the 1900s. A member of a large Japanese contingent seeking to relocate to South America, Maeda met and befriended a successful local businessman named Gastão Gracie. The Japanese master then began teaching Gastão’s eldest son, Carlos Gracie his fighting system. Even Carlos’ younger brother Helio, picked up the techniques of jiu-jitsu.

The two eventually mastered this martial art. They revised and fine-tuned several moves. Together, they developed their own brand of fighting and ushered in the birth of modern Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

The diminutive Helio Gracie strongly promoted their version of Jiu-Jitsu by competing in grappling competitions and winning most of his encounters. A “Gracie Challenge” was even issued by Carlos Gracie to showcase the effectiveness of their style. Fighters who trained under different fighting systems would then try to defeat Helio or other Gracie family members skilled in the use of Jiu-Jitsu.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu banner would eventually gain worldwide popularity. The Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) was established during the early 1990′s and demonstrated the effectiveness of BJJ in a real life situation. Boxers, karate experts, sumo practitioners, karate masters and even brawlers shared the stage with Helio Gracie’s son Royce. In tournament style, eight-man contests, Royce showed just how practical BJJ was by winning several UFC events. On the other side of the world, Royce’s elder brother Rickson was also on a winning streak. Competing in Japanese promotions, he built up an impressive, unbeaten fighting record.

Because the majority of people have no inkling to how to properly fight on the ground, A BJJ practitioner may chose from a variety of choke holds, submission holds or joint locks to end a brawl. Even from seemingly inferior positions, those using BJJ techniques can quickly end a fight.

Mash Gym of Redford, Michigan provides top Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training. Since BJJ is a self-defense system, and just a flat out way to get in shape, so training under sub-par teachers should not even be an option. Those in the area should consider Mash Gym as it is home to some of the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructors in the Michigan.
